Roll The Dice on Kids Casino Night for Compton Jr. Posse in Malibu
It all began when Mayisha Akbar, founder of the Compton Jr. Posse, bought three properties in a little-known rural segment of Compton so her kids could grow up in a positive, inspiring environment. That was back in 1988, and since then hundreds of Compton kids have learned to ride and care for horses. They’ve competed in shows throughout Southern California, sharing their passion and determination for the sport while getting a glimpse of life beyond their gang-threatened neighborhood.
For 20 years, the students have learned discipline, responsibility and communication and life skills from Mayisha, the Posse’s volunteers and, most of all, its horses. Wherever they go, the Jr. Posse kids inspire riders of more fortunate circumstances to run for the roses in their own lives.
Mayisha reports proudly that eight Jr. Posse graduates are now in college. “We have found that investing in these children with our equestrian program motivates our kids to achieve their goals,” says the hard-working and charismatic Mayisha. “We believe there can be no better investment in the future of our country.”
The Posse’s Casino Night fundraiser on Sat. May 10 will be held at long-time supporter, Malibu Valley Farms, in Malibu. Entertainment, dancing and great food are all on the night’s agenda, and silent and live auctions are slated to raise funds that will enable the Posse to continue “keeping kids on horses and off the streets.”
To donate an item or support the Jr. Posse in any other way, please contact Mia 818-424-5338 or mia@malibuvalley.com, or Beth at theshevins@aol.com. To learn more about the Compton Jr. Posse, visit www.jrposse.com.

Hong Kong, Here We Come? Not! Foxfield’s P.O.T.S. Show in Westlake Village
Foxfield’s famously fun day for riders over 30 has been going on for at least 20 years, back when this reporter thought it was so funny and amazing that people that old could still compete. The acronym stands for Potential Olympic Threats Show and the day is promised to provide “all the thrills of an international horse show with none of the stress and risks.” None of the fences exceed 2.9” in height but count on high excitement as the older set gets their day in the sun. For more information, visit www.foxfield.com or call 805-495-5515.
